With all of the information that is currently being given out on the news about the H1N1 flu, it is important to remember that there are other immunizations that young children need.  Immunizations are preventative measures that we can take to protect our children from diseases that are infectious and which may lead to disabilities or even death.  If children are not vaccinated complications such as deafness, pneumonia, blindness, brain damage, paralysis, or kidney damage may occur. 

Childhood diseases can be prevented.  The occurrence of many childhood diseases that were prevalent years ago has been reduced dramatically in the United States as a result of children being immunized. When children are vaccinated there is a reduced risk in the environment to other children who are unable to be vaccinated.

A few parents do not want their child vaccinated for cultural, philosophical or religious reasons.  In recent years, some parents have expressed concerns about the safety of the vaccines that are given to children.  However, available scientific research supports the argument that children receive the immunizations as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

It is important to remember that your child is not fully protectd if they have only received part of the recommended shots.  Diseases are not prevented by partial immunizations. If your child has missed a shot, make them up as soon as possible.  If your child has not yet received immunizatons, it is not too late to start.  Check with your health care provider and follow their recommendations for your child's immunizations.

Immunizations records are required before your child can enter school.  Most licensed day care facilities also require proof of your child’s immunizations.
