Lawn & Garden

Gardening is considered our nation's most popular pastime, yielding fresh fruits and vegetables for the dinner table, a cleaner environment and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. North Carolina Cooperative Extension helps gardeners learn more about new plants, native plants and environmental stewardship. Extension-trained Master Gardener volunteers are instrumental in these efforts, sharing their knowledge of plant selection, cultural practices and pest management with fellow gardeners, school students and others.

Master Gardener volunteers are part of the volunteer staff of NC State University's Cooperative Extension Service. They are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, and gardens. They provide unbiased, research based educational assistance and programs in horticulture and environmental issues to the gardening public. Visit the Extension Master Gardener web site to learn more.

In conventional agriculture there is a heavy emphasis on enhancing soil fertility and crop yields through chemical (petroleum-based, synthetic) fertilizers and pesticides. While synthetic fertilizers may initially result in bountiful crop growth, their continuous use ultimately exhausts soil and damages plant health. Wipe Out Weeds

Weeds in ground cover beds present a challenge for removal. You cannot spot spray or you injure the ground cover. Hand weeding can be done from the edges but walking into the bed to reach the other weeds damages stems often leaving dead branches. But, what alternative do you have? Wipe the weeds.
