National 4-H Congress

National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the 4-H program. For seventy-nine years, youth from the United States and its territories have participated in this youth leadership development conference. The Congress provides youth, ages 14-19, a quality, educational, and cross-cultural experience that exceeds what any state independently provides. North Carolina's delegation to this year's Congress included 17 youth and 3 adults. MORE

	North Carolina Tobacco Research Check-Off Referendum November 19th, 2009 @ 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Raeford, NC
	The referendum is being held to let tobacco growers decide if they wish to continue the self-assessment program. This program has been in place since 1991, and the law requires that a new referendum be held every six years. A 2/3 favorable vote will mean that growers are willing to continue to assess themselves to support tobacco research and education. In conventional agriculture there is a heavy emphasis on enhancing soil fertility and crop yields through chemical (petroleum-based, synthetic) fertilizers and pesticides. While synthetic fertilizers may initially result in bountiful crop growth, their continuous use ultimately exhausts soil and damages plant health. This is because they do nothing to increase plant health.
